The toolbox: connectors, plugins, skills
Claude Code gets much more useful when you plug things into it. Here is what each kind of add-on does, and the ones worth installing today.
Three kinds of add-on
Connectors, plugins, and skills compared
Add-on
What it is
Example
How you add it
Connector (MCP server)
A bridge to an outside service, so Claude can read from it or act in it.
Let Claude open issues on GitHub, or drive a real browser to test your page.
claude mcp add … in your terminal, or Settings → Connectors on claude.ai.
Skill
A folder of instructions and scripts Claude loads only when a task needs it.
Build an Excel file with working formulas; make a PDF report.
Usually bundled in a plugin. Your own go in .claude/skills/.
Plugin
A bundle of skills, commands, agents, hooks, and connectors you install in one go.
Compound Engineering: a whole plan → build → review workflow.
/plugin inside a session, or claude plugin install ….
Plugins worth installing
Workflow · Every
Compound Engineering
Turns vibe coding into a repeatable loop: brainstorm, plan, build, review, then write down what you learned so the next loop is faster. The workflow page is built around it.
Gives Claude real code intelligence (go-to-definition, type errors) for Python or JavaScript/TypeScript, so it catches mistakes before running anything.
Let Claude read and produce real spreadsheets, PDFs, Word files, and slide decks. Perfect for turning a cleaned dataset into a one-page handout for a commission.
Create .claude/skills/clean-village-csv/SKILL.md with a short description and the steps your team agreed on. Claude loads it whenever a task matches the description.
---
name: clean-village-csv
description: Clean a Village of Oak Park CSV before analysis
---
1. Trim whitespace in every column; standardise dates to YYYY-MM-DD.
2. Report rows dropped and why.
3. Save to data/clean/ and cite the source file in the README.
Connectors (MCP servers)
Add connectors from your terminal with claude mcp add, then check them with /mcp inside a session. If you use claude.ai or the desktop app, connect services under Settings → Connectors instead.

How to add
GitHub
Create your repo, open issues for your team's to-do list, and review pull requests without leaving Claude.
claude mcp add --transport http github https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ (sign in when prompted), or the GitHub connector on claude.ai.
Playwright
Claude opens your page in a real browser, clicks around, and takes screenshots: automated QA.
claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest (needs Node.js).
Google Drive
Pull in a shared team doc or spreadsheet as context.
claude.ai Settings → Connectors.
Notion or Slack
Read your team's notes or channel; post a status update at demo time.
claude.ai Settings → Connectors.
Figma
Turn a sketch or mockup into a working page, or send a page back to Figma.
claude.ai Settings → Connectors, or Figma's own MCP server.
Supabase
A free hosted database if your prototype needs to save data.
claude.ai Settings → Connectors.
Mermaid Chart
Draw flowcharts and architecture diagrams from a description.
claude.ai Settings → Connectors.
Python libraries Claude will reach for
You do not need to learn these. Knowing the names helps you ask for them.
